Representatives of Distell and the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards addressed the media today about the results of the recent Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards.

Since 1967, the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards has played an important role in acknowledging excellence in theatre and spreading interest and appreciation for Arts and Culture.

The 2011 Awards event, which took place on the 20th of March, was widely acclaimed as a prestigious, glamorous and entertaining event. Many of the guests observed that “this was one of the best-ever Awards events”.

After the Awards ceremony, however, a few of the judges queried the outcome in two categories, namely “Best Performance in a One-Person Show” (awarded to James Cairns on the night) and “Best Performance in a Musical” (awarded to Ilse Klink on the night). Following a thorough review of the results, the Chairperson of the Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards and Distell representatives discovered that an administrative error had been made in both categories and that the awards should have been presented to two other recipients. “We feel absolutely terrible about the mistake, and we can’t apologise enough for the hurt and embarrassment it may have caused,” says Conrad Sidego, Chairperson of the Awards. “Naturally, our primary concern is for the feelings and professional standing of the two awards recipients at the event and the two who should have received awards. For that reason, Irma Albers (Distell’s Arts and Culture Controller) and Marina Nel (one of the awards judges) flew to Johannesburg to speak to all of the affected nominees personally. At the same time, Vernon de Vries (Distell’s General Manager: Corporate Affairs) and I also engaged with the affected nominees and other key stakeholders in Cape Town.”

“It goes without saying that it was extremely difficult to go and face the adversely affected nominees,” said Albers, “but we wanted to be open and honest with them. They were certainly very disappointed, and understandably so. They were also very gracious and professional, and accepted that there was no harmful intent on the part of the organizers.”

With regard to the changes in the two categories, the performers who are now formally acknowledged for “Best Performance in a One-Person Show” and “Best Performance in a Musical” respectively are Antoinette Kellermann for her role as Ella / Max Gericke in As Die Broek Pas and James Borthwick for his role as Juan Peron in Evita. Both Antoinette and James were thrilled to be acknowledged, but were very concerned about the effect of the news on their fellow nominees, whom they hold in high esteem.

According to the many nominees with whom the Fleur du Cap Awards organizers have interacted with over the past four-and-a-half decades, receiving a Fleur du Cap Award is regarded as a premier achievement in the Theatre world. “This is why it is of crucial importance to preserve the credibility of the Awards”, asserts Sidego.
