SA Jazz pianist Kyle Shepherd will perform the world première of his 'Xamissa' project at Festival d’Automne à Paris in September 2013 and a concert in Cape Town.

'Xamissa', Place of Sweet Waters, is a large-scale compositional work comprising various movements which Festival d’Automne à Paris (Paris Autumn Festival) commissioned Shepherd to write in celebration of the Saisons Afrique du Sud-France 2012/2013 (South Africa - France Seasons 2012 & 2013). 'Xamissa' is, in essence, an authentic musical portrayal of Cape Town (his hometown) which, according to Shepherd “brings together the sounds and cultures of Cape Town by incorporating the Xhosa, Afrikaans and English languages - with the use of voices, piano, the Xaru, the ghoema drums and tenor saxophone.” It contains all the rich indigenous melodic and rhythmic elements derived from traditional Cape Choral music, Cape Malay music, Xhosa music as well as modern forms of Jazz improvisation and avant-garde.

For this ensemble Shepherd has assembled some of Cape Town’s finest Jazz & Traditional music talents, namely, Buddy Wells on tenor saxophone, Claude Cozens on ghoema drums & percussion, and the voices of Bulelani Madondile, Portia Shwana, Busisiwe Ngejane and Xolisile Yali. Shepherd himself will be on piano & Xaru.

In a major pioneering innovation in drum design, Shepherd and Claude Cozens have designed and built what is believed to be the world’s first complete Ghoema Drum Kit! All the ghoema drums (gammies) were custom-made by the “Boeta” Achmat Sabera, one of Cape Town’s most prolific goema drum-makers!

Capetonians will have a rare opportunity to catch the formidable Kyle Shepherd Trio live in concert at UCT’s S.A. College of Music, Rondebosch, Cape Town on Saturday, 7 September 2013 before the Xamissa ensemble heads for Europe for Festival d’Automne à Paris performances at the prestigious Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Paris on 25 September 2013 and at L’Onde Théâtre et Centre d’art, Vélizy-Villacoublay on 27 September 2013 after which the young virtuosic pianist heads for Germany for a solo piano concert at the infamous Hallenbad Kultur Am Schactweg , Wolfsburg.

Shepherd has released three critically acclaimed South African Music Award-nominated albums, namely ‘fineART’, ‘A Portrait of Home’ and ‘South African History !X’. His debut solo piano album, recorded in Japan, will be launched in the East- Asian country in October 2013.
