The South African State Theatre presents the premiere of a new Afrikaans drama, ‘Vir.Ander’ on 2 September at the State Theatre.

Written, directed and produced by PANSA award-winning writer and director Jannes Erasmus, featuring Johan Baird, Ferdinand Gernandt, Ruan Wessels, Christopher van der Westhuizen, Morné Vogel, Ludwik van Wyk, Zijn Rudolph van Zyl, and Divan Laing. The names ring a bell from the acclaimed Naledi Award-winning Afrikaans production ‘AS’.

The new play is based on true events on masculinity - What it means to be a young Afrikaans man in the new South Africa. The story follows a group of young men who are sent to a conversion camp in order to become “men”. It deals with manhood, sexuality and acceptance.

Vir.Ander further shines a light on the true meaning of homosexuality. The controversial way of how it is perceived and how families take it on. The pressures that come with family obligations when someone is not allowed to be who they are or express themselves in a way that they want to in a very complex place like the new South Africa.

The name Vir.Ander, meaning “for others,” draws its angle from the Afrikaans word “Verander” that means ‘change’. Erasmus has creatively twisted the Verander word to give it a new meaning, being “to change for others.”

“At the end of the day the only thing that pulls people through is standing together, unity and your perception of freedom,” said Erasmus. Vir.Ander will enjoy a full season run till 24 September.
