ASSITEJ SA in partnership with the National School of the Arts (NSA) is calling for professional productions for the NSA Festival of the Arts 2018.

The NSA Festival will take to the stages of the Joburg Theatre and the National School of the Arts (NSA) from 6-11 March 2018.

Topping the bill this year is The Wiz, the vibrant soul / R&B re-interpretation of Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. With a top creative team headed by director Tracey Human, The Wiz will feature between 50 and 70 learners from across the four NSA art departments; art, dance, drama and music. It is in the interdepartmental musical that the versatility of the NSA learners is showcased, allowing the triple-threat performers a chance to shine in the spotlight! The Wiz is the flagship production from the NSA and is guaranteed to be a big audience pleaser while providing critical vocational training for the burgeoning performing artists many of whom are eyeing a possible career in musical theatre.

In the 18 years since the inception of the annual Festival, the National School of the Arts' annual flagship project has grown in size and stature. It won the 2014 BASA (Business & Arts South Africa) “Increasing Access to the Arts” Award and continues to welcome hundreds of young audience members, many of whom have not seen a mainstream theatre before. The Festival offers a diverse line-up with several multi-nominated and award-winning professional productions thanks to the partnership with ASSITEJ SA (International Association of Theatre for Children & Young People).

The 2018 Festival is set to build on these successes and promises an inspiring well-focused programme that will engage, educate and enlighten the young audiences ensuring an enduring love and respect for the arts and many happy returns to the theatre.

The NSA Festival of the Arts is hosted by the country's leading arts school – the National School of the Arts in association with ASSITEJ (International Association of Theatre for Children & Young People). The NSA welcomes the National Lotteries Commission as a funder for the 2018 – 2020 festivals and will announce additional funders as soon as the partnerships have been finalised.

ASSITEJ South Africa is a non-profit organisation that works to promote international awareness of South African theatre for children and young people, through networking, organising exchanges, touring performances, and by facilitating contacts.
